Tag - Your It

In my endeavors across the net to find great social site that you can use to promote yourself I see many users that do not use tags properly. Normally I see only a handful of tags that a user has placed to describe the content the he or she is trying to get noticed.

For those of you who don’t know what tags are, basically they are keywords and phrases that best describe the content you are publishing. Tags are a way of teaching the web how to categories your information and if used correctly will accurately help in describing your website content.

All web 2.0 services allow the use of tags. YouTube, Del.icio.us, 43Things/Places, StumbleUpon and the plethora of web 2.0 platforms for publishing. Take for instance YouTube. A great marketer, Ed Dale publishes lots of great information about Internet marketing. Ed is a well known Australian Internet marketer most famous for selling his 38 niche sites for $5 million a few years ago. He’s also know for his “underachiever” program designed to teach anyone how to make profitable niche sites.

Now a simple search of YouTube using the keywords phrase “ed dale” returns about 116 results. If you want to get more specific in your search you might try “internet marketing ed dale” which returns about 26 results. This search gives you his catalog of Internet marketing videos that he has produced.

Now here’s the trick to why it is so easy to find Ed’s stuff on YouTube. He uses single keywords, not phrase’s, which are directly related to his material. The tags for his marketing videos are ed, dale, internet, marketing.

Here’s another example of using tags. Several months ago an ‘A” blogger, who will remain anonymous, tried to pulled meme on me. To many me’s eh? Anyways, I was new to blogging but was fully aware of the low tactic that many use to trap newbies, so I really did nothing. This person used my name in their tags, and the meme spammed 3 sites that had absolutely nothing to do with the topic. Anyway, my name also happens to be the name of a famous race car driver. I have been trying to get my name to the top of the SERP’s for over 2 years. The competition was stack against me at about 3 million. Well, less than 3 months later I’m now in the #6 position on Google. Small feat yes, but just wanted to show you how powerful tags can be, whether they are used for good or evil.

Bottom line is use your tags and “tag it” properly. The results will surprise you.
