Is Social Networking Really Worth Your Time?

The question of social networks and what good they are to your business or site has been creeping around for awhile. Many people absolutely hate the idea of using social networking sites, for what reasons I do not know. It maybe that they are introvert and do not know how to socialize or maybe its the fact that when they hear social networking they think MySpace right away. Filled with kids!. What good is that to me?

Well, these people might be missing the point. Although places like Friendster, Face Book and MySpace are for the younger generation there are many businesses and professional using these sites with great success.

I hear things like - “Yes, these things take time, and you have to constantly be updating and providing good information” - wrong! It takes 1 hour to setup an account and create a profile page. As for adding the content it’s even easier - just use a widget that post snippets from your site onto your profile. These sites are acting like billboards for you allowing you to work on your main site and have some of the content go to you advertisement space or profile page.

Also many think they have to reference the social networking site on their pages in order to get anything from them. This is also completely wrong. Yes, while it is true that some sites require a widget that links back to them in order to be accepted such as BlogCatalog the majority do not require it.

The days of old are gone and what worked yesterday isn’t working so well today and what works today might not work in the future. In the days-of-old you had to rely on the search engines to find you and to get that to happen you had to do a lot of SEO, article submitting and directory submitting. While all of these are still solid foundations and should be used in your strategy when generating traffic, social sites should not be over looked.

Submitting to a search engine and waiting to rank naturally in the top 10 for results take 4 to 6 months. With social networking sites this time is cut down to 1-3 months, sometimes less. You must think of it this way, if Google died tomorrow could people still find your site? I know many site owners who rely strictly on SEO and the search engines and refuse to stoop to such a fade. That is what I think is hurting these people, by thinking it is a fad they are shutting out hundreds of opportunities to meet great people and get some SE love.

Although you may not like the concept of interacting (you can do as little or as much as you want) on social networks, from the standpoint of traffic, using these services when marketing you or your business should not be overlooked. Besides it’s free, takes little time and the results are very positive.
